AZEK - BEADBOARD - WATERPROOF
(Use when BB will get wet. Not necessary for porch ceilings if roof is water tight.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

For areas with frequent direct water contact, such as inside a tub or shower stall, we ONLY recommend AZEK PVC. This MIRACLE material will never rot, cup, split, twist, or warp. It is impervious to moisture, salt, and insects.

For the surface to be truly waterproof, you will need to waterproof the seam between each board by running a continuous thin bead of waterproof caulk into each groove immediately before installation.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. I'd love to help with your projects in any way I can.

AZEK - CLEANING
(Use to explain AZ cleaning.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

AZEK can be cleaned using liquid soaps such as dish or car wash. For "spot cleaning", you might try using Barkeeper's Friend, found in most grocery stores and similar to Comet. Rinse with water.

Avoid abrasive cleaners as they can permanently dull the surface.

AZEK - PAINTING
(Use to discuss painting PVC.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

As it comes from AZEK®, their Cellular PVC boards and sheets have a mill finish indistinguishable from painted wood. Because it is impervious to moisture it does not require painting for protection. However, as we cut, mould, or sand while making items out of PVC, the interior of the material is exposed. Because AZEK Cellular PVC is so fine-grained and consistent throughout the material, many of our customers install it unpainted.

Nevertheless, we believe painting provides the very best, most consistent appearance. Paint helps pollen, dust, and other contaminants slide off the surface and also covers very faint streaks of surface yellowing sometimes produced during machining.

Cellular PVC may be painted to achieve a custom color using a 100% acrylic latex paint with a Light Reflective Value (LRV) of 55 or higher. For darker colors (LRV of 54 or lower), paints specifically designed for such applications must be used, such as Sherwin-Williams VinylSafe™ coatings.

Follow the paint manufacturer’s recommendations to apply. No special surface preparations are required prior to painting — just ensure the AZEK surfaces are clean and dry.

Moisture cycling is a main reason for paint failure on wood. Since Cellular PVC absorbs no moisture, paint last much longer on Cellular PVC than on wood. However, paint may also take longer to cure on Cellular PVC. Generally, paint will be dry to the touch quickly and hard to scrap off in a few days, but may take up to 30 days to fully cure, depending on the humidity and temperature.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. I'd love to help with your projects in any way I can.

AZEK - PORCH BOARD INSTALLATION
(Use to discuss AZ Porch Board Installation.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

Since all installations are unique, it is the sole responsibility of the installer to determine specific requirements in regards to each porch application. Best practice is to have all porch designs reviewed by a licensed architect, engineer or local building official before installation.

Typical Installation Guidelines: Most porch flooring is laid perpendicular to the wall of the house, (or to the longest wall if it is enclosed on one or both ends) and with the ends of the Porch Boards facing out. Some porches are laid parallel to the house and some are laid at an angle. Which ever pattern you choose, the Porch Boards will have to lay across the joists. Since joists typically run perpendicular to the house wall, blocking can be added between joists to attach the flooring.

If Porch Boards will be installed across joists or blocking at a 90° angle, joists should be spaced a maximum of 16" center to center. If installing at a 45° angle to the joists or blocking, they should be spaced on 12” centers. Joists should provide a proper slope away from the house to facilitate drainage. A 1/4” drop per foot is recommended. Adequate structural support must be used under Porch Boards wherever load bearing Posts and Columns will be pressing on the porch floor.

If using AZEK Porch Boards on an existing porch, remove existing flooring and make sure joists are structurally sound, free of nails and with proper spacing and slope. Items related to stair construction, structural framing or any other general construction questions should be reviewed with the local code authority, engineer, or architect.

AZEK - RUBBER MAT DISCOLORATION
(Use if AZ Porch or Deck has become discolored due to use of a rubber door mat.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

AZEK Customer Help recommends using a heat gun for this type of discoloration. They recommend the heat gun be on low setting and keep heat 3" from surface using a constant back and forth motion.

Let us know how this works! We're eager to help in any way we can.

AZEK - Trimboard
(Use to explain more virtues of AZ Trimboards.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

AZEK Trimboard is the only brand of trim to hold a building code report (ESR-1074). It is used for all non-load bearing exterior trim applications, such as soffit, fascia, window and door trim and beadboard ceilings. Low-maintenance and easily worked with regular woodworking tools, AZEK Trimboard resist moisture and insects and will not rot, warp or decay.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. I'd love to help with your projects in any way I can.

AZEK - Trimboard - Nail Holes
(Use to discuss filling nail holes in AZ Trimboard.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

Filling nail holes is not necessary for the performance of AZEK Trimboards; especially if using a high quality fastener such as stainless steel or hot dipped galvanized.

However, a good way to aesthetically cover nail holes is to fill them as listed below and to then give the project a coat of paint. The painting is for cosmetic reasons only. If you do not wish to paint, you should be aware that "white" does not always mean the same "white" and you might want to color test a smear of the caulk and let it dry before applying it to your Trim.

AZEK, our PVC manufacturer, recommends using any polyurethane or acrylic based caulk or exterior spackle to fill nail holes, gaps and joints. If painting, bondo will work for filling nail holes.

Silicone based caulks are not recommended as they do not adhere well to AZEK PVC.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. I'd love to help with your projects in any way I can.

MISC - EXTERIOR RECOMMENDATIONS - MATERIALS
(Use to recommend exterior materials.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

AZEK Brand Cellular PVC (synthetic "wood") is our first choice for exterior use. Most of our products are available in this MIRACLE material. It will never rot, cup, split, twist, or warp. It is impervious to moisture, salt and insects. AZEK Cellular PVC has most of the good qualities of real wood but none of wood's maintenance requirements. And, unless you tell, no one will know it's not real wood! Read more and order Samples.

Our second material choice for exterior use is Cypress. The U.S. Forest Service ranks Cypress among the top woods for ease of keeping well painted and for resistance to cupping and checking (weathering issues). It accepts and holds stain or paint very well, and is very weather resistant. Read more.

Cedar and Redwood are also good exterior woods. Our Western Red Cedar has a smooth surface and only a few small, tight knots. Please do not confuse our premium Cedar with the rough, knotty Cedar available at most lumber yards and home centers. Western Red Cedar holds paint well and is very weather resistant. However, it is relatively brittle when used for thinner scrollwork items. Therefore, we do not offer our scrollwork items in 3/4" thick Cedar.

Redwood also holds paint well and is very weather resistant. However, Redwood's more open grain can produce a slightly rougher edge cut when used for scrollwork. Like Cedar, Redwood is relatively soft and is somewhat brittle. Also, the Redwood now available includes both red and blonde wood within the same board. Previously All Heart grade (heartwood) boards were available and were almost entirely red. More recently the trees necessary to produce All Heart grade are simply not available to the saw mills.

The U. S. Forest Service ranks Poplar, a hardwood, as stronger and denser than Pine. It is a good all around wood but lacks the special decay-resistant qualities of Cedar, Cypress, or Redwood and will require more frequent painting.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. I'd love to help with your projects in any way I can.

We have online help to assist homeowners with their DIY porch, or to give them a good understanding of what's involved. For example, our extensive Online Porch Guide has a wealth of information. It includes porch designs for front porch additions, covered porches, country porches, verandas, and more. It explores how to build a porch, from creating porch plans to building porch assemblies using our porch railings and porch posts.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. I'd love to help with your projects in any way I can.

MISC - TEMPORARY ROOF SUPPORTS
(Use to discuss temporary porch roof supports, such as when changing a porch post or porch flooring.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the questions.

We assume your railing is only attached to the posts/columns (perhaps with kickspace blocks under the bottom rail.) If so, you should be able to replace the front joists and flooring without removing the columns and railings. We also assume your posts/columns sit atop the existing porch flooring.

The basic procedure will be to support the roof structure at each post with a temporary brace made of 2x material running from beneath the beam above each post to the nearest point in the yard possible, while missing the handrailing and front edge of porch flooring. If you will be replacing the front floor joists, you will need a bit more clearance for this.

Obviously, it is critical these temporary supports be securely attached at their tops and staked at their bottoms to keep them securely in place. They will, as a set, support the weight of the porch roof, ceiling (if any), posts, and railings. For this reason, it will be best if each brace is a "stiff back" (two 2x4's nailed or screwed at right angles to each other along their length). This will prevent dangerous bowing of the braces.

To actually raise all existing support posts slightly above the flooring, you will need to ensure each post is securely attached at it's top. This attachment has to be secure enough to not only support the weight of the post, but the railings that are attached to each post. Therefore, before you begin actual lifting, you should secure this attachment by screwing 1x4's into the face of the column several feet from the top and then over at a 45 degree angle to the beam above the column. Do this on both sides of each column.

Next lift the porch roof structure very slightly at only one column using a stiff back temporary support above a bottle jack - just enough to relieve pressure at the bottom of the permanent post. If you are lucky the post bottom is no longer securely fastened to the existing porch flooring. You can test the attachment by trying to pass a hand saw blade or other thin, stiff item completely under the column.

If the post bottom is still attached to the flooring, you should be able to use a reciprocating saw fitted with a long blade to cut through the fastening hardware. Do this by running the blade along the top of the floor all the way under the post, but take care not to mar the floor surface.

Once the post is completely free of the flooring, position the stiff back 2x brace (the one that contacts the ground) and relieve jack pressure on the temporary stiff back support. If the post settles so much you can no longer "wiggle" its bottom just slightly, you will need to re-jack with the stiff back post and re-position the ground brace slightly higher.

You can now proceed to raise and brace all posts. If you have a long porch you may be able to replace the front joists in sections to avoid having to raise all posta at the same time.

It is likely the existing porch flooring is attached to the joists below the columns. However, you should be able to remove the old flooring under the columns by first cutting it away close to the column bases with a circular saw and then, using a reciprocating saw fitted with an appropriately long blade, cutting the flooring loose by running the blade between flooring and joists.

Please let us know if you have other questions we can help with... and good luck on your project.

PRODUCT - BRACKETS ON COLUMNS/POSTS WITH BUMP OUT
(Use when customer wants to put our Brackets on a Column or Post that has a bump-out at the top (such as a Column Capital or moulding.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

Most of our Brackets are standard with attached frames. It will probably be easier to install Brackets over a Column "bump out" (the plinth and/or ring at the top) if they are not framed. If you will let us know how far out from the main Column surface and how far down from the beam or ceiling above your Column your "bump out" is, we can suggest Brackets that should fit over the "bump out" without modification. If you wish your Brackets to have a frame, it might also work to remove some of the frame prior to installation. Again, that depends on the size of your "bump out."

Here are Before & After photos of such an installation.

PRODUCT - BRACKETS ON ROUND COLUMN/POSTS
(Use when customer wants to put our Brackets on a round Column or Post, including those with Capitals.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

Spandrels and porch Brackets can be added to your round Columns. In fact, if you add both it makes it easier to install the porch Brackets, as we will explain below.

If requested, we can provide Classic Spandrels with extra top and bottom railing at both ends. Before installation you will cut more off the top rail (so that it can span the distance between your Column Capitals) and less off the bottom rails (so they extend to the Column shaft). If you want to proceed with this, let us know and we will provide instruction for the simple measurements you will need to provide so we can properly build your Spandrels.

Once your Spandrels are installed you can then add unframed porch Brackets below the Spandrels. As long as you stay with 3/4" or 1" Bracket thickness, the small gap between Bracket and Column will not be a problem.

It is also possible to add porch Brackets to round Columns without installing Spandrels. The trick is to select porch Brackets with sufficient empty space in their top corners to miss your Column Capitals.

If a Column decorative ring is present a bit below the Capital, it can be cut and a small section equal to the width of the Bracket removed to allow the Bracket to rest against the shaft of the Column.)

You can see Before & After photos of such an installation here.

Brackets that work well with round Columns having Capitals or moulding at their tops include most of our Crescent Brackets, providing they are ordered without frames. The larger ones (links to those are on the far right side of that page) can be ordered 3/4" or 1" thick by special request.

If you think you might want to add Brackets to your round Columns let us know how far out from the main Column surface and how far down from the beam or ceiling above your Column's Capital or top moulding extends, and we can suggest Brackets that should fit over the "bump out" without modification. If you wish your Brackets to have a frame, it might also work to remove some of the frame prior to installation. Again, that depends on the size of your "bump out."

PRODUCT - CELLULAR PVC BEADBOARD PLANKS - CEILING
(Use to highlight advantages of Cellular PVC Beadboard Planks.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the email!

Cellular PVC Beadboard Planks are super low maintenance... perfect for use on your porch ceiling, and very cost effective when its durability is taken into account! Comes in factory-tough white or blue and can be painted another color. Either way, it looks like traditional painted wood Beadboard.

Quick and Simple Installation! Each 5-1/2" wide (4-3/4" installed) board contains 3 beads and appears to be 3 individual boards when installed.

A wide nailing tab on one side of each board eliminates typical "through the tongue" nailing. And, since each adjoining board is held in place by a snug tongue & groove joint on the other side, nailing is only necessary on one side of each board. Super simple! Super quick!

PRODUCT - COMPOUND NOTCHING - STAIRS
(Use to explain how to notch Balusters for use on stairs.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

We strongly recommend using our Sloped-Top Bottom Rail on your stairs. This will help protect the railing on the stairs from water damage. You will need to order your stair Balusters un-notched so they can be notched at the job site for a perfect fit. Below is a brief explanation of how to Notch Balusters for use with our Sloped-top Bottom Rail on stairs:

A compound cut (2 angles at once) will be required, since the notch itself must slope to match the slope of your stairs. We don't provide this type of notching option, as sloped notches are best done on the job site. A skilled carpenter, following the instructions below, will be able to fit your Balusters.

You will most likely want to order Balusters for the stair railing one length longer to accommodate the angled cuts.

It is always a good idea to make test cuts in a scrap of wood and test fit everything prior to final notching of Balusters. The final test piece should be saved as a pattern.

Example: If the angle of slope on your stairs is 45 degrees, and since our regular size of Sloped-top Bottom Rail is beveled to 30 degrees per side, a properly sloped notch for this can be cut as follows:

Using a radial arm saw, set the blade to a 30 degree bevel to match the slope of either side of our Sloped-top Bottom Rail. Swing the arm of the saw to match the slope of your stairs (45 degrees in this example). Set the height of the blade to cut halfway through the Baluster.

With one edge of the Baluster along the fence of the saw and the bottom of the Baluster closest to the saw blade, crosscut to the center of the Baluster.

Swing the arm to the other side of the saw table and reset at the same 45 degrees. (Blade bevel remains unchanged at 30 degrees.) Flip the Baluster over and complete the notch with another crosscut.

If your angle settings are correct and the depth of each cut is to the center of the Baluster, the two cuts should meet cleanly at the bottom of the notch.

Frequently compare your cuts to the previously prepared pattern to be sure the saw is staying properly set.

PRODUCT - WEIGHT BEARING - WOOD BRACKETS
(Use to inform our customer that our Brackets are not rated for weight bearing use.)

Hi ,

Thanks for the question!

Yes, many of our customers do use our Brackets as you've described. However, it is not possible for us to rate our Brackets for weight capacity, as this depends upon the Bracket chosen, it's thickness, type of wood, and installation.

Generally speaking, thicker Brackets with less detailed cutwork are stronger. Pine and Cypress are medium strength woods. Oak, Poplar and other hardwoods are stronger. Cedar and Redwood are not as strong. Installing Brackets closer together will spread the load. Additional hardware (purchased locally) for extra support is also an option, if needed.
