Subrails are an excellent choice for simplified balustrade installation with hidden hardware.

Subrails add height and strength when used beneath Handrails. The green Handrail in photo at left would appear about half as thick if it didn't have Subrail below it. Please consider our Beaded Subrails below for maximum strength and visual impact.

Subrails also work well as a structural transition element (brick red in photo) between the white Running Trim and the Balusters below the Subrail.

Subrails can be ordered below but can also be ordered with P-series Handrails and Sloped-top Bottom Rails as Rail Sets.


Benefits of using Subrailing:
• Easy and professional Baluster installation. Just nail or screw through top of Subrail into top of Baluster. Then screw through bottom of Subrail into bottom of Handrail and no hardware will show! Review our installation system for details.

• Handrailing will be more substantial, as the Subrail appears to be part of the Handrail!

• You can easily paint your Subrails a contrasting color (before installation, of course) to achieve a 'pinstripe' effect.

Optional Subrail Bottom Channel
A bottom channel will make installation of Sawn Balusters quite a bit easier. We can cut a centered 1/4" deep channel into the bottom of your Subrails for $0.29 per foot and ONE $20 Setup Fee per order. The channel width you specify below will accommodate Balusters of that same width. Bottom Channel fees will not show on your online order nor on subsequent auto-generated emails, but we will manually adjust your final invoice to include them.

Beaded Subrails (See Plain Subrails below) Our Beaded Subrail includes an elegant single-bead design on each side. This bead is slightly off-centered vertically to work perfectly with the bottom channel of our P-2, P-3, or P-4 Handrails. When installed in the bottom channel of these Handrail's, the side bead will be centered on the exposed Subrail. Beaded Subrail is also available with vertically centered side beads for use below Handrails that don't have a bottom channel. Please specify Side Bead Position below.

Plain Subrails If ordering Plain SR4 Subrail for use with our P-4 Handrail, please consider upgrading to our Beaded BSR4 Subrail. Its extra height will better compliment the width of the P-4 Handrail.

Note: It is not necessary for Balusters to be as wide as Subrail,

Note: We are currently unable to obtain Western Red Cedar at reasonable prices in the quality and lengths we require for Rails. We suggest you consider Cypress or AZEK® Brand Cellular PVC (synthetic wood) if you want to upgrade from Poplar for exterior use.
