Newels are most commonly used where the
balustrade changes direction or ends, such as at steps.

If the spaces between Porch Posts are fairly long, Newel Posts can be placed between each pair of Porch Posts to add visual interest. Newels should extend from the top of the porch floor (or step) to a height sufficient to allow adequate space in which to attach the Handrail.
